Box wines gaining respect, market share

This Detroit Free Press article says that box wines are gaining both market share and respect in the wine drinking world. Although box wines still account for only a tiny sliver of revenue overall, sales have gone up 41% in the past year. In addition, a new category of box wines, called “premium box wines,” are now on the market, to drive home the point that the stuff in the box is no longer el cheapo, inferior wine.

The article cites several contributing factors to box wines’ appeal. One is convenience - box wines come in nonbreakable containers, and they don’t have corks that can break upon opening. Another, of course, is economy, with the average box wine working out to less than $4 a bottle when broken down into per-bottle size. Box wines are also considered more environmentally friendly than their glass counterparts.

So, why not give box wine another try, and enjoy a glass of it one one of our many fine wine glasses.
