Alcohol-infused whipped cream

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Just what the world was waiting for… Whipped Lightning, alcohol-infused whipped cream.  There are four flavors available, and the site contains recipes for all kinds of drinks you can make with the adult whipped cream.

What a great idea.

Recipes: Mussels in IPA sauce, and bourbon-pecan sweet potato pie

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Gotta do a quick post today, because I’m heading to an alumni luncheon at the local university.  Unfortunately, since the university has a no-alcohol policy, that means there probably won’t be any booze served with lunch. :(

In the meantime, though, I’ll leave you with a couple of good booze-based recipes.  Here’s one for mussels in India Pale Ale sauce.  Never thought of that before, but I guess the hoppiness of the IPA would help bring out the mussels’ flavor.  You’ll have to scroll through the writer’s opinions in beer (which are actually pretty interesting) to get to the recipe.  There’s also a recipe for pan-roasted chicken, but no booze is involved (other than a suggestion to drink a beer while you cook), so who cares.

For dessert, here’s a recipe for bourbon-pecan sweet potato pie.  Note that this one takes a day’s preparation:  You have to soak the pecans in the bourbon overnight.

You can find more booze-related recipes in Mid-South Alcoholic Supply’s bookstore.

Robotic arm pours beer upon text message command

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

You’ve probably heard of Twitter, where you can subscribe to your friends and get short updates of what they’re doing, but have you heard of Pownce?  Pownce lets you send media and events to friends, and there’s no limit to message length (it’s 140 characters on Twitter).

So, right about now you’re probably thinking, that’s great, Dr. Booze, but why are you talking about Pownce on a blog about alcohol?  Well, according to the L.A. Times, inventor Matt Reed has created a device called The Inebriator, a robotic device made from Legos, that subscribes to your Pownce RSS feed, and pours a beer whenever it sees a message containing the word “pour.”

Wow.  First the robotic beer cooler and now this.  We are in the presence of pure technological genius.

Don’t feel like running to the kitchen to get another beer? Check out this remote contol beverage cooler

Monday, October 27th, 2008

For the ultimate in laziness, check out this remote controlled beverage cooler.  This thing can travel over carpets, rugs, and floor to deliver beverages to you, its path controlled via remote control up to a distance of 40 feet.  Can be used outside too.  It holds up to 12 drinks in ice, has a zippered lid to keep drinks cold, has protected walls to keep from getting your floors wet, and it’s collapsible and be folded up when not in use.

This is true genius.  Now if someone would only invent a remote-controlled bathroom, there’d be no need to ever get up off the couch.

Shochu

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Did you know that sake is no longer the number-one alcoholic beverage in Japan?

In recent years, according to this SFGate article, sake has been surpassed by a distilled beverage made with starches and grains called shochu.  Once a working-class drink, shochu has taken on more of an upscale image within the past 10 years.  It has also benefitted from medical researchers’ claims that shochu prevents strokes and heart attacks.  Shochu drinkers report that it goes with most types of food, and it’s light on calories - a 2-ounce shot of shochu contains only 35 calories, compared with 120 calories for the same-sized shot of vodka.

Read more about shochu, and its Korean equivalent, soju, here.

Lawsuit launched over iPhone beer programs

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

If you own an iPhone, you may have heard of a program called iBeer, which allows you to swish around a virtual beer on your phone’s screen.  You can even pretend to take a sip of the beer by tipping the phone backward.  Made by a small company called Hottrix, iBeer has become one of the most-loved programs in the iPhone community.

Well, large corporate brewer Molson Coors decided it wanted a piece of the action.  They couldn’t successfully negotiate with Hottrix to license the software, so they created their own program, iPint, which looks and feels very, very similar to iBeer.  Molson Coors claims it is not the same as iBeer, because iPint swishes a beer called Carling around, rather than iBeer’s micro-brew.

The iPint program is especially hurting iBeer’s sales because Molson Coors is giving iPint away to iPhone users who watch a Carling ad.  Hottrix charges $3 for iBeer.

So, not surprisingly, Hottrix has sued Molson Coors.  It remains to be seen if the tiny company can take down the Goliath that is Molson Coors in the courts.  Intellectual property meets beer.

SpanishVines.com: Guide to Spanish wine, culture, history, and travel

Friday, October 24th, 2008

A new website called SpanishVines.com came online last week, designed to be a guide to Spanish wine, culture, history, and travel.  The site has a “Wine 101″ page that introduces you to Spanish wines, as well as a “products” page that recommends wines.  The travel guide, which is constantly changing, is a good place to start for everyone planning a trip to Spain.  You can also learn about Spanish history, and there are “news & notes” pages, and a blog.

Be sure to enjoy your favorite Spanish wine in one of our many wine glasses.

Reviews of pocket breathalyzers and digital alcohol detectors

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The website Saving Consumers Time, which summarizes reviews of products to help consumers quickly make informed choices, has posted a review entitled “Portable alcohol breath tester, digital breathalyzer, and breathalyzer keychain reviews.” Although we most definitely encourage drinking here at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply, we encourage responsible drinking above all else.  If you drive after drinking, one of these would be a good investment.  Many of the reviewers quoted on the site noted that not only did these devices save them from drunk driving arrests, but caused them to think more responsibly about their drinking habits as well.

You can also find personal breathalyzer reviews on Mid-South Alcoholic Supply’s site.

Pumpkin vodka and pumpkin pie cocktail recipes

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Autumn is here, and it’s the time of year for pumpkin pie and pumpkin ales.  But, pumpkin vodka?  Here’s an article from a Vancouver website that teaches you how to make pumpkin vodka, using a bottle of regular vodka, a pumpkin, and several other ingredients.  Once you have made your vodka, the article then gives you a recipe for a pumpkin pie martini.

Don’t forget to pick up a martini glass at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply for your pumpkin cocktail.

Ultimate home arcade driving cabinet includes beer tap

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Last week Dream Arcades announced the unveiling of the Octane 120, their new arcade driving cabinet.  In addition to a 120-inch DLP HD projection screen, this cabinet comes with a beer tap, so you don’t even have to get up to enjoy a frosty cold beverage.  It hold two 5 gallon or one half barrel keg, and the cup holder allows you to pour a beer as you play.  The cost is $6,995 plus shipping and handling.

Wow.  An arcade console with a beer tap.  Normally I’d wrap up with an “… and go buy some crap at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply” link, but I can’t even begin to compete with this.
