In today’s economy, is wine a safe investment compared to stocks?

The Wall Street Journal speculates that wine and art may be two of the safest investments left in today’s economy.  With people heavily invested in supposedly-safe large bank stock seeing their fortunes wiped out, who knows what a safe investment even is anymore?  However, a bottle of fine wine… that’s virtually guaranteed to appreciate in value over time (although, you have to find a buyer before you receive your gains, so wine is something of an illiquid liquid investment).

The article mentions that a bottle of 1962-vintage wine was expected to bring $6,000-$9,000 at a recent auction.  Its actual sale price?  Over $13,000.

If you plan on investing in wine, you can also invest in one of MSAS’ many fine wine cabinets to store your holdings.
