The New York Times recommends that you pick up a copy of Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book 2009 to cope with touch economic times.  According to the article, Johnson has compiled a list of safe, dependable brands that can help you save on wine in shops and restaurants.  Sounds like a great resource to take with you when you go out.  The book also contains a short course on pairing wine with food.
