Tips for a budget-conscious New Year’s Eve party

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

A Phoenix TV station, KNXV-TV, recently posted some tips to help you throw a budget-conscious New Year’s Eve party.  Although some of the tips (do an eVite rather than paper invitations, use an iPod instead of hiring a DJ) are not booze-related, the article also contains some good advice for cutting back food and alcohol expenses.  The tips are relevant not only to New Year’s, but any time of year.

Another great piece of advice is to buy your party supplies through Mid-South Alcoholic Supply.  We have thousands of items, many at 30-40% off or even more.  Secure payment and shipping is handled by Amazon.com, the Internet’s most trusted retailer.

Good wine blog: Dr. Booze salutes Dr. Vino

Monday, December 29th, 2008

I came across an article a couple of days ago listing the best box wines of 2008, and thought that would be a useful topic to post about.  However, upon further examination, I discovered that the article was part of a very good blog about wine, written by a guy who calls himself “Dr. Vino.”  Nice name!

Dr. Vino is a real Ph.D. who teaches wine classes at NYU and the University of Chicago.  He’s written two books about wine and has wine maps for major cities on his site.  Besides the look at box wines, other recent posts include whether screwcaps diminish a wine’s value, an interview with a wine collector, and a recommendation for a good port.  If you’re into wine, this is a blog you will want to bookmark.

Politics and booze

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

We’re closing in on three weeks away from Barack Obama’s inauguration, and over in Kenya they’re getting ready.  When Obama was elected to the Senate, East African Breweries released a Senator beer.  Now that he’s moving into the White House, the beer has been promoted too.  Read more about President beer here. Also, here’s a link to East Africa Breweries’ home page.

Meanwhile, in the Chicagoland area, Blagojevich cocktails have started to pop up, commemorating the investigation of Gov. Rod Blagojevich for allegedly attempting to sell Obama’s seat in the Senate.

Tired of politics?  Take your mind off it for a while with a few shots of Jagermeister in Mid-South Alcoholic Supply’s Jager shot glasses.

Cooking with booze: White Russian cake

Friday, December 26th, 2008

White Russians are a great cocktail, but now you can have them on a plate as well as in a glass.  This article from the Schenectady, NY Daily Gazette has a recipe for White Russian cake.  Ingredients include coffee liqueur and vodka.  Best served the day before, so plan ahead.

Beer bottle Christmas tree

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

One of my favorite sites, LifeHacker, posted a video showing how to make a lit Christmas tree from 1,050 empty bottles of beer.  Here’s the link. I think the best part of building this kind of Christmas tree would be accumulating the needed supplies.  1,050 bottles?  That’s almost three beers a day for an entire year.

Be sure to pour all those beers into your choice of the many fine beer mugs available at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply.

Booze TV: Three Sheets with Zane Lamprey on the MOJO HD network

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

I’d wish you a Merry Christmas, but let’s face it… how merry can the day possibly be, when all the bars are closed?

If you’re home bored in front of the computer, I’ve got a booze-related link to entertain you.  Check out the TV show Three Sheets with Zane Lamprey, available on the MOJO HD channel (you can watch the show online).  Lamprey travels around the world and immerses himself in foreign drinking cultures.  Bangkok, Argentina, Moscow, Chile, Scotland, and Barcelona are among the places he has visited this season.

Espresso martini recipe

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The Harrisburg Examiner recently ran a recipe for an espresso martini.  If you plan on having people over to your home for Christmas, this would be a good way to impress them.  You’ll need espresso, vodka, coffee liqueur, and creme de cacao on hand to prepare this cocktail.

Be sure to pour your espresso martini into one of the many fine martini glasses sold at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply.

Hot toddy

The hot toddy is a classic cocktail that is great to serve at Christmas parties or other parties in the winter.  This Modesto Bee article teaches you how to make a hot toddy.  The recipe is from the book The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks, which the article quotes at a price of $35, but which is available at a 43% savings off list price at Mid-South Alcoholic Supply.

Cooking with booze: Recipe roundup

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

It’s time to take a look at some of the booze-related recipes that have been posted to the web in the past week.

Here’s a recipe for a wrap sandwich containing beer braised brats with feta that is easy to make.  It combines the best of Greek and German cuisine.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel posted this recipe for mashed orange bourbon yams with dried cranberries.  This would be a great side dish for Christmas dinner.

For the main course, you could make this pepper crusted beef tenderloin with bourbon sauce.

Furthermore, you could serve it with some bourbon chocolate chip quick bread on the side.
