A legislative victory for beer pong

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Drinkers celebrated a victory last week as a state senator withdrew a bill to ban beer pong in public bars.

Sen. George Della, a Democrat from Baltimore, introduced the legislation in early February.  In the days that followed, Della’s office received 1,200 phone calls and letters from unhappy beer pong players, and every a few bar owners.  Inundated by shouts of protest, Della withdrew the bill on February 11, and beer pong remains legal in the state of Maryland.

If you need beer pong equipment or a table, we’ve got what you need in Mid-South Alcoholic Supply’s beer pong store.

The fourth annual World Series of Beer Pong was held this past weekend at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, and over 400 teams competed for the right to call themselves the world champion and claim a $50,000 prize.  A team called “Smashing Time” dominated the competition and easily made it to the final round, where they defeated “Getcha Popcorn Ready” in two straight to win the tournament with an overall record of 18-3.

Want to practice so you can get ready for the 2010 tournament?  Mid-South Alcoholic Supply has a full range of beer pong supplies and tables.

Beer pong gets its own Web 2.0 site

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Yesterday I reported that there is a Web 2.0 site for wine lovers.  Well, today I’m back to tell you about a social networking site for people who play beer pong. It’s called Pong Tracker.  You can sign up as a member, and browse leagues and tournaments (or create your own).  Registration is free, and it’s a good way to meet other beer pong players in your area.  (One note:  They simply call the game “pong” and recommend playing it with water instead of beer, a recommendation I have a feeling is taken seriously by almost no one.)

Mid-South Alcoholic Supply has a large assortment of beer pong tables and equipment.  Why not buy your own beer pong table and create your own tournaments to list on Pong Tracker?

A war against beer pong

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Time Magazine reports that a growing number of towns and college campuses are prohibiting beer pong, saying that it encourages drunkenness and subjects those nearby to foul, obscene behavior. Some Jersey shore towns have even passed ordinances banning all indoor drinking games. If you want to buy a beer pong table or supplies, you better do it now, while you still can!

However, the article reports, beer pong also has its supporters. The 4th annual World Series of Beer Pong, to be held at the Flamingo Hotel January 1-5, 2009 (conveniently scheduled over college winter break), should be the biggest one yet. A field that is expected to grow to over 1,000 participants will compete for a $50,000 grand prize.

Can beer pong give you herpes?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

This article from CO-ED magazine cites beer pong as a major cause for the spread of herpes simplex virus-1. According to the article, spread of the virus is up 230% in the past 10 years, and the sharing of beer pong cups seems to be a major reason why.

So, don’t buy any of our fine beer pong tables and accessories, don’t play beer pong, and go back to catching herpes the old-fashioned way.

Beer pong glossary

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to judge a beer pong tournament for a local bar. However, there were a couple of problems with this:

1) I asked if I was allowed to drink while I refereed. Their response: “Allowed? You’re REQUIRED to be drinking!” Then they told me there was free beer for judges. Needless to say, I took liberal advantage of that perk.

2) After the tournament started, I realized something: I didn’t actually know the rules of beer pong. I’ve played before, but never sober enough to be able to mentally retain all the rules.

I found a beer pong glossary online. I plan on reading up before I judge any more tournaments.

You can find a complete line of beer pong tables, balls and accessories here.

Wii beer pong game forced to change name

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Video game maker JV Games has been forced to change the title of its upcoming Beer Pong game for the Wii video game system. The game, which involves dropping ping pong balls in cups of beer and then ordering the opposing team to drink, was rated “T” for Teen by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. This cause a backlash, as parents, teachers, and even the Attorney General of Connecticut to conclude that the game encourages teens to drink.

The yet-to-be-released game has been named “Frat Party Games: Pong Toss,” with the reference to beer removed. When it hits the market, you can be sure Mid-South Alcoholic Supply will add a video game category to the store.
