A great Sunday cocktail: The veggie red snapper

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

It’s Sunday, known as “Sunday Fun Day” to many in the world of alcohol.  Every Sunday my friends and I meet up at one of the local restaurants to indulge in Bloody Marys and mimosas.

This Washington Post article discusses a recipe for the Veggie Red Snapper, which it claims is “the superior version” of the Bloody Mary cocktail.  It’s called a “veggie” cocktail because the recipe calls for cucumber-flavored vodka.  Celery bitters are preferred over celery salt for mixing this drink; ask your local bartender where to find them.

If you want to give this drink a try, you can pick up a cocktail shaker and some highball glasses from Mid-South Alcoholic Supply.

The Bloody Mary turned 75 this week

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Epicurious notes in this article that the Bloody Mary cocktail turned 75 this week, on Monday, December 1.  The cocktail was believed to have been invented in the 1920s, but at the time it was nothing but vodka and tomato juice.  The addition of Tabasco in 1933 is when the drink officially became the Bloody Mary.  A favorite of the local Sunday brunch crew here in Downtown Memphis, home of the Mid-South Alcoholic Supply HQ, the Bloody Mary consists of vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worchestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt, pepper, and ice poured into a highball glass.  However, there are hundreds of different variations on the Bloody Mary.

Happy birthday, Bloody Mary, and we look forward to you for another 75 years of Sundays!
