Did you know that sake is no longer the number-one alcoholic beverage in Japan?

In recent years, according to this SFGate article, sake has been surpassed by a distilled beverage made with starches and grains called shochu.  Once a working-class drink, shochu has taken on more of an upscale image within the past 10 years.  It has also benefitted from medical researchers’ claims that shochu prevents strokes and heart attacks.  Shochu drinkers report that it goes with most types of food, and it’s light on calories - a 2-ounce shot of shochu contains only 35 calories, compared with 120 calories for the same-sized shot of vodka.
